Add the Goweil Kombi bale wrapper to bale and wrap in a single pass, further reducing manpower and fuel, and preventing spoilage from soil contamination. • Higher available crude protein due to higher bale density since less heat is generated throughout the fermentation process • Less feeding waste due to the reduced spoilage and longer bunk life that result from the lower pH and higher acid production in higher-density bales • Fast wrapping immediately after the bale is formed, protecting silage bales before they even touch the ground Learn more about our round baler solutions at newholland.com

Lab Testing Changes at the CSA

s many of you are now likely aware, 2019 brought some changes to the lab services offered through the CSA. In mid-December 2018 the CSA was made aware that a negotiation was being completed that would see the sale of Delta Genomics’ lab services in Edmonton to Neogen Canada Inc., a subsidiary of Neogen Corporation. With this now completed, Delta’s laboratory operations have transitioned to Neogen Canada and are Neogen’s fifth animal genomics laboratory worldwide (Neogen also owns GeneSeek laboratories in Lincoln, Nebraska). It is the intention that this acquisition will help ensure more affordable genomics services to drive greater adoption of Genomic technologies throughout the Canadian livestock industry. According to Graham Plastow who is Delta’s board chair, “This is an excellent opportunity for the Canadian Livestock industry. The sale of our genomics services to Neogen Canada will provide us with extra resources to support the development of value-added genomics tools for our industry while maintaining high quality genomic services for our clients.” Neogen Canada is maintaining the lab’s operations in Edmonton and Delta Genomics will continue its mission to improve the sustainability, profitability and competitiveness of the Canadian livestock industry. Delta Genomics’ CEO Michelle Miller has been named the new General Manager of Neogen Canada and has continued to work with the Delta Genomics Board of Directors and the CSA office to support customers during the transition. As many of you are aware, Delta has been the lab used by the CSA for our parentage and DNA genomic testing for the past several years so you may be wondering what this all means to you and the CSA. - With the transition to Neogen, the processing and extraction of all samples will be done in Edmonton and then forwarded to GeneSeek for genotyping.

The biobank samples from historic testing done at Delta and Genserve (SRC) will remain on file in Canada. The majority of the Delta staff will remain which is positive for CSA staff who work with them on a day to day basis. - One of the huge gains with this change is that pricing on many of the tests offered through the CSA has decreased! The new pricing and tests available can be found in our fee schedule at: http://www.simmental.com/pdf/CSA%20 Fee%20Schedule%20Jan%201’19.pdf - The accuracy for basic parentage tests will increase with the use of more markers (200) used to confirm the animals parents. A 500 marker test is now available at a slightly higher cost that can be useful in line-breeding situations or when full brothers are used in a multi-sire breeding situation. Things that haven’t changed: - It is still recommended to allow 1 month for turn-around time from when the lab receives your samples! You need to allow the appropriate time for your samples to reach the lab – then add approximately 20 business days! - All tests must be ordered through the CSA office and not from the lab directly. Our staff will run all the billing through your CSA account and is prepared to answer any of your questions. The sale of Delta to Neogen is positive for CSA members and the Canadian beef industry in many ways. It provides stability to current CSA lab services as well as access to any Neogen propriety testing and new product development. At the same time a lower cost structure is achieved that we can pass on to our membership. It is also anticipated that the sale will allow Delta to expand into other areas of the Canadian beef industry in attempt to add value to the genetics we produce for our commercial customers.

1 3 Undeniably, Cowboy Cut’s finest son, certain to be a trailblazing herd sire who will impact programs, worldwide. Selected as the top-selling bull at 2018 Wilkinson sale, where he realized serious appreciation for his impressive structure, wealth of natural muscle, eye appeal, large scrotal size and excellent feet. Incredibly powerful, square hipped, super sound and exceptional performance data and EPDS. Marty Ropp, Allied Genetic Resources, stated that “his dam is, without question, destined to be one of the breed’s greatest young donors.” She also produced Keller’s 2018 top seller! Breed Improvement

A Brief History of Performance – How We Got Here and What to Do About It?

T

By Sean McGrath, Breed Improvement Co-ordinator for the Canadian Simmental Association

he Simmental breed and Simmental breeders have always been associated with performance. When the cattle first came across the ocean, they delivered a massive performance punch to a largely traditional Hereford cow base. This included a big leap forward in milk production and added yield. At the time, cattle were largely selected based on visual merit and performance testing was limited in its scope and application. The introduction of Continental breeds into the Canadian mix led a revolution in testing and at one point all registered Simmental cattle required a weaning weight on record in order to receive their certificate. Over this time frame, the Canadian Beef Grading system moved towards rewards for lean yield and discounted fat and marbling. This was largely driven in response to human health research and the “war on fat”. Over this time frame as a whole the cattle used in industry gained a lot of leg, lost significant “doability” and most would agree went too far in a singular direction. Lots of folks have seen or are in those pictures where the champion bull has the top of a cowboy hat barely showing over the top line. Over this same time frame, a significant decline in beef demand occurred and ultimately we signed a free trade agreement with the USA towards the end of the 1980s. Attached to this in the 1990s was a revision in the beef grading system that saw us move towards a marbling based quality grade system and grid based pricing. This resulted in another rapid repositioning of the industry and as programs such as “Certified Angus Beef” gained momentum we saw a black tide in the nation’s cow herd. In this same time frame we saw the first deployment of genetic evaluation or EPD on beef cattle populations. While these evaluations were around before, the early 1990s represented a shift in computer technologies that allowed more large scale production of evaluations. These were typically done using sire/maternal grandsire models and focused on easier to evaluate traits for which we had lots of data, primarily growth traits. CSA was at the forefront of this charge, releasing one of the first ever sire reports in 1992. There were some issues with the technology, models and the data, however the new system was leaps and bounds ahead of previous tools as far as creating change in the cattle. Through the 1990s and 2000s, Canada saw the export market take on ever more significance to our overall industry, particularly the market in the USA. New technologies such as carcass ultrasound and the internet were creating new opportunities to evaluate seedstock

for traits that directly impacted market acceptability and to provide that information in real time to both breeders and customers. As this progressed, genetic evaluation technology also was able to make fundamental shifts due to computing power advancements and CSA pursued both multi-breed evaluation and an international evaluation with our counterparts in the USA. Again this created much upheaval and changes to the evaluation, but represented a massive advancement in technology. Although always acknowledged, it was around this time that computing databases became powerful enough to record and analyze maternal traits. It was also at this time, where a significant problem with our data was realized in terms of measuring maternal abilities. Previously, every breed reported those calves that were good enough to be registered and often did not report calves that were not deemed as marketable. This had the effect of not giving full credit to those better calves when making genetic comparisons and more importantly not giving credit to dams for weaning a calf each year. This was the drive behind THE in the Simmental breed and represented a fundamental shift in data collection, where it is important to report on what happens to each dam every year. We are still working through the effects of historic data biases in genetic evaluation, but the more total herd data we get the better the evaluation functions. Skipping ahead a few years, the next monumental event could probably be given to DNA technology. While it operated in fits and starts and had some growing pains, the growth and advancement of DNA technology over the last decade has been astounding. For less than the price to examine 300 pieces of DNA 10 years ago, we can now examine in excess of 50,000. More importantly, we have a growing level of knowledge so that we can extract continually more information from those pieces of DNA. Most recently, we have arrived at a place where that DNA information can be directly combined with pedigree and performance information in a multi-breed evaluation to provide EPDs on a wide number of traits that include growth, calving ease, carcass and maternal traits. This BOLT evaluation represents a state-of-the-art tool for advancing the selection of beef cattle. There are a lot of other advancements and efforts made by Canadian Simmental breeders over the last many years, however I think this outlines a few keys in the progress of the breed. Given this information what should a breeder do today? I think we can summarize what to do in three steps.

22 SCFeb19_insides.indd 22

First in the words of Wayne Gretzky, “we need to skate to where the puck is going to be.” In other words, we need to take a look at the industry as a whole and decide what our goals are going to be. Without a clear goal, the tools of genetic selection we have today are powerful enough that we drift very rapidly in any and/or every direction and we can overshoot a profit point more easily than ever before. Clear goals are key. Secondly, we need to measure as much as we possibly can. This includes reporting every calf from every cow, every year, but should also include measuring other traits that are important to the industry such as carcass ultrasound. Third, we need to use the tools available to us in our selection. The membership has made massive investments in genetic evaluation tools over time and these tools work, when used in the context of achieving a goal.

This does not necessarily mean that you want the biggest numbers for every trait, rather that you can use the tools to maintain a position or move in a specified direction for a trait. That is not to say that traditional selection methods aren’t still important, such as structural evaluation, but rather that we have an opportunity to take the lead with high octane selection tools that can add and drive profit to the industry. The future looks bright for Simmental cattle in Canada and the spirit of innovation continues to thrive and be important to the success of the breed. If there is one thing that the performance history of the breed shows it is that progress is continual and things will change (sometimes rapidly).

ven though a uterine torsion is very rare, relatively speaking to other calving malpresentations, they are often, difficult for producers to recognize. If we can recognize them and act on them quickly a vast majority of the calves can be saved. I will draw on my and other veterinarian’s vast experience and try and describe what you feel so you can quickly get help and not make the mistake of attempting to pull these calves. I have never seen an actual percentage of torsions because they are often not documented but my guess is one every couple thousand births, so the larger producers may experience one every few years. The practice I was from saw lots of cow calf operations and we would see upwards of ten yearly I would say. In practice I always had the producer feel in the vaginal canal when we did diagnose one so they would recognize the feeling and I do the same thing with new vets or student veterinarians. Once you examine one it is hard to miss it the second time. A torsion is really when the free portion of the uterus (where the calf is) twists over on itself. The vagina is anchored by soft tissue in the pelvis so really it is much like putting a golf ball in a sock holding the open end stationary and giving the sock a 180 or 360 degree twist. You then cannot reach in and pull the golf ball out. This is exactly what happens in a torsed uterus. The initial complaint is very similar to a full breech (coming tail first) where the cow or heifer looks like they should have calved hours ago but nothing happened. The cow is bagged up has been nesting yet no waterbag or heavy straining has started. I always tell experienced cattlemen if they suspect something is wrong they are probably right. This is especially true if they know the cows past history and they have calved normally. The nesting and belloring or looking uneasy means either a breech, other malpresentation or a torsion so best to vaginally examine the cow. When examining a torsion you will usually be able to reach the calf. Initially you will feel bands of tissue running this way and that and it is like running your hand down a corkscrew. When you finally reach the calf your hand may be upside down and the calf may even be upside down. The degree of the torsion will determine how tight the opening is. Generally the cows contractions line up the calf to be presented normally so if upside down or sideways and you feel these bands of tissue it is very likely a torsion. When one examines a cow that isn’t ready to calve yet you go straight in the vagina and run into a closed cervix that feels like a round doughnut with a hole you may be able to get in one or two fingers. A torsion feels much different with an uneven opening that you can wiggle your arm through and the cervix will be open enough to get your arm through touch the calf and the water bag will not be broken generally.

Almost all torsions once identified it is imperative to get veterinary intervention. Veterinarians have several methods they can use to detorse the uterus and if done successfully the calf can be delivered alive out the back end. Provided it was alive to start with! A veterinarian must first determine which way the uterus is torsed as it can be either clockwise or anticlockwise and so one must twist it the opposite way to get it detorsed. Some very experienced veterinarians can detorse them by hand by getting the uterus rocking and skillfully flipping it back over. The cervix will then continue to dilate and the uterus will now dump out lots of fluid and the cow will get straining again. Other methods involve using a detorsion rod to facilitate untwisting the torsion by applying these apparatues to the calf’s leg. With the use of this instrument and the experienced practitioner helping it along these can work when further force is necessary. Another method sees the cow cast on her side and the veterinarian will hold the calf while the cow is rolled to again untwist the torsion. Again it is critical knowing which way the uterus is twisted. I would say that in my experience a higher percentage I untwist by moving the calf clockwise hence they are a counter clockwise torsion. If attempts by any method fail the veterinarian can rely on getting the calf out by caesarian section. In some cases the calf may be detorsed internally through a c-section incision and then still pulled out the back especially if the calf is dead. If the calf is twisted and on the far side of the abdomen often the calf must be taken by c-section first and then the uterus detorsed and sewn up. As you can see many things to consider when we find a uterine torsion but I am proud to say many times we can get a live calf and the cow makes an uneventful recovery. Early detection on your part is the absolute key component. I have seen backwards calves torsed, twins torsed etc. Just like a prolapsed uterus torsions are an absolute fluke and no reason the cow would do it again in subsequent years so long as they breed back there is no reason to not keep the female. Heifers have the same odds as cows at torsing. I have never seen one prior to calving but have known of one in an equine at seven or so months gestation. The mare had slight colicy signs and the owner and vet were quick to detect. Surgery was done, the uterus flipped back normal and left. The mare went on to deliver a normal foal several months later. Quite a remarkable story so never give up if you detect one because with experienced help the outcome will often surprise you. Have a great calving season everyone but if you do have a torsion you will know what to do. Any time a cow is fussing too long check her out torsions, full breechs or other malpresentations often have that same history of uneasiness and no apparent progress. Have a great calving season everyone.

YCSA Alumni Story Katie Wood:

YCSA experience pays off in lecture hall as well as the farmyard Skills of working with people and organizations benefit career and life. For a shy kid who didn’t grow up directly on a farm, but loved being around her grandparents’ farm, Katie Wood found that being part of 4-H as well as the Young Canadian Simmental Association (YCSA) program has provided her with invaluable life lessons. Connection to the YCSA programs allowed her to do something she enjoyed — learning about cattle and attending livestock shows. That was great fun, but at the time she really didn’t appreciate how the experience and skills she learned in those early years would benefit her later in life as she pursued a career towards becoming a ruminant nutritionist and associate professor at one of the top agricultural colleges in Canada. “I was a pretty shy kid, so when you first get involved even giving reasons for judging can be pretty intimidating, but you learn to work through that,” says Wood. Today, with a PhD in Ruminant Nutrition and Physiology, she can stand before a lecture hall of 350 students at the University of Guelph and give a lecture with confidence. She still credits how the experiences that started when she was 10 years old showing cattle at YCSA, 4-H and many other eastcentral Ontario cattle shows helped paved the way. Wood was actually born in Toronto, raised in the nearby community of Claremont and took her early education at schools in Markham. She spent most of her weekends at her grandparents’ farm in Fraserville, Ontario near Peterborough, some of the pioneer Simmental breeders in Canada, Don and Pat Wood. And that’s where the seeds were planted. “I just fell in love with cattle,” she says. “I spent a lot of time at my grandparents’ farm. I can’t remember exactly

when I first got involved in the farm, but I was probably about nine or 10 when my grandparents encouraged me to join the Young Canadian Simmental “ Association program.” That began a 15-year journey with both the provincial and national YCSA levels that took her across most of the country and into parts of the ” .United States. Along the way Wood learned many things. With the encouragement of her grandparents she was able to have her pick of the new heifer calf crop as she launched into many seasons on the heifer show circuit. “We went to a lot of summer and fall fairs as a kid,” says Wood. “The Millbrook Fair in early June was always the first of the season. I remember some of the first ones and being among a group of 10 and 12 year old kids, and the calves were barely halter-broke. It was sometimes a bit of a rodeo but we all had fun.” She attended several of the East Central Ontario YCSA heifer shows as well as open shows. She remembers attending her first “big” YCSA show at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto in 1995 and later attended other national YCSA events in Swift Current, SK, one at Strathmore, AB, and helped organize a National YCSA Classic in Ontario in 2007. She also had the opportunity to meet other young Simmental enthusiasts at the World Simmental/Fleckvieh Congress in Calgary and in Germany.

I just fell in love with cattle

34 SCFeb19_insides.indd 34

1/21/2019 5:38:21 PM

“At some events we showed cattle while other times I was judging. I participated in quizzes and learned about marketing and were involved in sales pitch competitions,” she says. “Perhaps most important of all, I got to meet and know people from all parts of the country; the whole experience was just a blast.” Along with showing and judging cattle, Wood also got involved in the YCSA organization at the provincial and national levels. In the early 2000s she served as vice-president and president of the YCSA Ontario for approximately five years and served on the national board from 2005 to 2008, also serving as executive officer and vice-president for the national board. It was during this period she was involved in successful efforts to relaunch and re-brand programs and interest in the National YCSA program.

While involved with YCSA, Wood was also continuing her education. She took her undergraduate program between 2002 and 2006 in Animal Science, completed her Master’s degree in 2009 in Animal Nutrition and then went onto complete her PhD in Animal Nutrition and Physiology in

2013. All at the University of Guelph. In 2013, she moved west to the Animal Science Dept. at the University of Saskatchewan to work as Post-Doctoral researcher working with Dr. Greg Penner. Since 2016 she has been an assistant professor at the University of Guelph where she teaches three courses, Animal Science to second year students, Beef Cattle Nutrition to fourth year students, and Growth and Metabolism to graduate students. She has also developed a robust research portfolio in research of beef cattle feed efficiency and nutrition. While the University of Guelph lecture hall may seem a long way from the Millbrook Fair grounds, Wood says the skills she learned over the years has served her well at work and in life. “Being involved in public speaking in the early years, whether it be a sales talk pitch or a set of reasons on a class of heifers, learning how to get past the nerves was really useful, especially for someone like me who was a pretty shy kid,” says Wood. And being involved with boards and various committees over the years she also learned a lot about how to conduct a meeting, organize large events, know protocols such as Robert’s Rules of Order, and appreciate the value of an organization having direction as set out in a constitution and many more! All of these types of skills she uses almost on a day-to-day basis running a large research program.

35 SCFeb19_insides.indd 35

1/21/2019 5:38:23 PM

Wood says building a network of people across the country has been invaluable. “Through the program you get to know people and you develop networks and friendships that last your whole life,” she says. “No matter where I go across the country I have connections with friends. I can drop by and visit and that’s worth a great deal. The whole YCSA experience just provides you with so many opportunities in life.”

Connection to and being part of a farming operation as a kid has also served her well. “As I pursued my academic studies it was so useful to have had that practical agricultural background. Having a sense of what makes good cattle and understanding the challenges and opportunities in livestock production makes me a stronger researcher and teacher,” says Wood. “In my classes, not every student is lucky enough to be from a farm background, but I hope to instill the same passion for agriculture I was exposed to through the YSCA and 4-H programs.” While it’s been some years since she has showed cattle, Wood still keeps connected to the farm. She always raised a few head of her own purebred Simmental under the Red Ribbon Livestock prefix and today still owns “three-and-a-half” head which are boarded at her best friend and fellow YSCA alumni Laura Robson’s farm at Millbrook. “Oh, there’s another benefit of the YCSA program,” says Wood, “you meet your best friend.”

Gordon passed away peacefully at St. Paul’s Hospital on Saturday, November 24, 2018. Gordon was born on the homestead in the R.M. of Dundurn on June 24, 1938. Gordon’s life was filled with his love for family, horses, dogs and cattle. He began showing cattle in 4-H at a very young age and was a 4-H leader for 25 years and he passed on his passion for cattle to all the lives he touched. He wasn’t a farmer, he was a true cowboy. He was a member of the Canadian Polled Hereford Association, the Canadian Simmental Association, the American Quarter Horse Association, as well as various other committees. For as much as he touched the lives of others, the imprint he left from his patience, knowledge, integrity and gentle guidance on his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren is beyond words.

Simmental on the Move

H

Randy Bollum Simmental Country Sales Representative

appy bull hunting! It’s one of my favorite times of year – bull sale season. By the time you read this, we will be starting the winter/spring months when the majority of North American beef cattlemen set their sights on lining up the genetics and “bull power” for the sires side of the equation that results in their next calf crop. That’s also the “crop” that becomes your next set of feeder calves, sale bulls, and replacement heifers. That is, in fact, some of your next paychecks. Not a matter to take lightly, for sure. There is not a day that goes by through the whole year when I don’t think about what bulls I should or could use, and what female will get mated to which bull. It’s part of the challenge and fun, of the seedstock business. It’s been often said and rightly so, that a true cattle breeder should always be on the lookout for a new herd sire to use. Yearround, if there is one that surfaces, you had better think

about obtaining those genetics before your competition does. Often times that great bull might be virtually right underfoot or even just close by down the road. I hope you have read through the ads in our last issue, the January 2019 Simmental “Commercial Country” that carried lots of information about upcoming events. In this issue you will receive additional reading about more options where to find your next herd sires and semen selections. One major advantage for the Simmental breed here in Canada is that we have a wide variety of types and kinds of registered breeding stock available within the breed. From different types to different colors, cattlemen have a choice of which kind of cattle they raise, yet can still call them Simmental and enjoy the advantages these cattle bring to the table. As always, I am looking forward to the upcoming sale season and eagerly await discovering some of the future genetic gems at the bull sales ahead. Happy bull hunting!
